Restaurants

A note on reservations: Italians tend to book a table rather than just walk in to a restaurant. If you can, do try to book in advance. Especially in high season this will avoid disappointment.

Our favourite place to eat in Volterra. Great food (including a dedicated truffle menu during truffle season), gorgeous, terraced courtyard in summer. Think about Del Duca for a special occasion. Good wine list and excellent service. If the chef is in a particularly good mood, you might hear him singing opera! Closed Tuesdays. No website. Reservations: thefork.it

Gelateria Dondoli

Not cheap but worth it! Reservations essential. Family-owned modern cooking with wines from family's vineyard. Great, friendly service.

Slightly out of the centre of the town. Typical Tuscan dishes. Stunning view from the terrace. Closed on Tuesdays.

An institution in San Gimignano.  Take-out only. Two outlets in San Gimignano. Great pizza which you can follow up with "the best Tiramisu in the world", a shop with various flavours near Porta San Giovanni.

The best gelato in the world?   A previous world champion. Extremely popular – be prepared to join the queue!
